In celebration of National Co-op Month and its theme, “Cooperatives Build a Better World,” two Indiana-based cooperatives joined forces on October 6 for a meaningful Day of Service, demonstrating the power of people-centered businesses to strengthen communities and local economies. Sixty-nine volunteers helped provide 10,896 meals by sorting, inspecting, gleaning, and repacking food donations at Gleaners Food Bank in Indianapolis.

“Community defines who we are as cooperatives,” said Jeff Conrad, Wabash Valley Power Alliance president and CEO. “Whether through our daily work or through service projects like today’s partnership with Keystone and Gleaners, we are proud to help strengthen families and communities in Central Indiana and beyond.”

WVPA, a not-for-profit generation and transmission electric cooperative serving 21 member electric distribution co-ops in Indiana and Illinois, partnered with Keystone Cooperative, a 100% farmer-owned cooperative serving Midwest farmers through agronomy, energy, grain and swine production. Together, employees from both organizations rolled up their sleeves to help fight food insecurity, serving neighbors in need right in their own backyard.

“The Keystone team plays a large role in producing the safest, most abundant food supply in the world, and we truly believe there’s no reason our neighbors should go hungry,” Keystone President and CEO Kevin Still said. “Our team is excited to partner with Wabash Valley Power Alliance to extend that mission beyond the farm and into our community, working together to make a meaningful impact through service.”

As Co-op Month continues through October, Wabash Valley Power Alliance and Keystone Cooperative are encouraging an ongoing commitment to service. Co-op month celebrates the unique business model that puts people first, and the 2025 Day of Service is an example of how cooperatives are making a difference.
